Wreaking Vengeance

Title: Wreaking Vengeance
Author: Lynn-Steven Johanson

My Thoughts:

I was drawn into Wreaking Vengeance from the very first chapter. The opening murder is shocking and brutal, but what kept me reading wasn't the crime itself, it was the investigation that followed.

Detective Joe Erickson and his partner Sam Renaldo feel like real detectives. Their careful examination of evidence, interviews with witnesses, and pursuit of multiple leads create a mystery that unfolds naturally and convincingly.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the unusual backdrop of the dog show community. Jennifer Logan's life as an Affenpinscher breeder and AKC judge adds a fascinating layer to the story. The investigation takes readers into a world rarely explored in crime fiction, from breeder agreements and kennel politics to passionate dog owners. These details enrich the narrative and make the victim feel like a fully developed person rather than simply a murder victim.

Joe's relationship with Destiny and the recurring appearances of the dogs provide welcome moments of warmth amid the grim investigation. Lynn-Steven Johanson delivers a thoughtful procedural that rewards readers who enjoy following clues, examining motives, and watching detectives slowly piece together a complicated puzzle.
